What would make this world into a Utopia?
Universal Hiking
Why?
Hiking is a leisure activity. It implies that participants have the time and will to do it, and aren’t compelled to walk untold miles as a matter of life and death. It also means that they have the luxury of choosing to be exposed to the elements for a period of time. Hiking is also economical–essentially free, in fact. It is accessible to anyone with a pair of shoes, though some hike without by choice. Companies specializing in outdoor gear will continue to thrive, but fancy equipment isn’t required to spend time on the trails. (Side note: Outdoor gear can be borrowed from the Los Angeles Public Library.) Hiking is a healthy activity. One needs to have a basic level of fitness to participate, and can count on improving her fitness with regular practice. It is also self-paced. Hiking can be a social activity. Hikers are a notoriously friendly bunch. If someone can’t find friends with whom to hike, they can easily meet them on the trails. Socializing seems to be a key to longevity. Hiking can be a solitary activity. Being alone in Nature, if one chooses, presents quiet time to ruminate as well as time to free one’s mind. Universal Hiking implies that everyone has their basic needs met with a modicum of security, everyone is in good health, and no one is lonely but can have alone time. It also implies care for the Natural World, and that we are good custodians of our resources. I’m in! Li M.
