What would make this world into a Utopia?
Less noise might be utopian
Why?
Many enjoy very loud noise if they are making it. I have lived next to an NYC school yard for 40 years, trying to calm my nerves by thinking about the variation of children’s screams that repeat themselves through generations. There have been many ideas about harvesting children’s manic energy with generating playground equipment with some success.
Apparently, Sound Energy can be collected using Piezoelectric Crystals. In the city, ubiquitous noise pollution from the shattering jackhammers to screaming school children is clearly an untapped energy source.
That type of capture is not a new idea.
Sirens, on the other hand, are designed to create alarm so awful that cowering obedience is the expected result.
I think that if existing siren sounds were replaced by particular animal roars, that even at moderate volumes, they may produce effective ancient alarm in our collective memory. For example, if Police alarms were the terrifying squeals and snorts of an angry boar, I think we would know that the pigs were coming on fast, and so we would move out of the way.. Fire trucks could use thunder or elephant trumpets. Ambulances, maybe the crazy (but life/death oddness) of the Loon cry… or an increasingly excited chimp.
As they are, sirens are not only soul shattering, but annoyingly mundane, created by blunt & stupid engineers.. The proposed animal sounds may make city life more of the cartoon that it sometimes is. That might be fun and I think quieter. James B.
